You can do top quality work with only a few basic tools. Roof insulation helps to reduce energy consumption by preventing heat loss during winter and heat gains during summer. The key to a quality insulating job is tight fitting batts that completely fill the stud cavity with no voids or gaps. Push batts all the way to the back of each stud space and then pull out the front edges until they re flush with the face of the studs.

430mm or 580mm work progressively around the perimeter of the building room. Insulation should be installed right to the eaves so the batt is 50mm over the outside wall. If your attic floor has no insulation install faced batts or faced rolls between each joist with the moisture barrier facing down against the drywall or plaster ceiling below.

Fit insulation tightly between joists but do not compress insulation. Keep measuring cutting and installing until all of your roof has been covered. Check the joist width to determine the correct insulation batt width. However you need to leave an air gap of 20mm between the insulation and your roof.

For best results install the insulation with the top surface up. If there is already insulation between the joists increase the r value by installing unfaced roll insulation right on top. Standing on your step ladder feed the first piece of insulation between the ceiling joists until it is laid flat. Run the unfaced strips perpendicular to the joists and butt each strip tightly together to form an airtight blanket of insulation.

When installing energise each batt by giving it a light shake and gently bouncing it on its side to help the batt expand to the thickness specified on the label. Make sure to keep it away from any lights. Standard r3 5 ceiling insulation batts are 185mm thick so depending on the roof pitch the batts may touch the underside of your roof at the edges of your ceiling. In new homes we recommend installing a combination of foil faced roofing blanket and roof batts if you live in an existing home then consider installing another layer of roof insulation on top of the existing batts.
