Inspect the flashing for gaps or cracks.
Plug pinholes with roofing cement and patch holes up to about 3 4 inch in diameter with a patch from the same material as the flashing.
Small holes or corroded spots in flashing can be easily repaired.
Inspect the flashing at the top sides and bottom edge of the chimney.
Position an extension ladder securely against the edge of the roof.
Apply a generous amount of roofing cement behind the flashing.
Cover any exposed nail or screw heads with roofing cement.
First roughen the area around the hole with a wire brush or sandpaper and then clean it.
Use a chisel to remove any hardened roofing cement.
Use masonry nails or screws to reattach the flashing tight against the chimney.
If none is found the leak must be confined to the mortar joints bricks or mud cap.
Starting at the front and then working the sides and finally the back section run water around the chimney while the observer keeps watching for a leak.
